The public streets within Bellefontaine receive snow removal service according to the following priorities that have been established based on traffic volumes and speeds:

Priority 1

Major roadways are salted and plowed first. These streets will continue to receive treatment as long as the weather conditions continue.

  • Major roadway include but not limited to the following: Main Street & Sandusky Ave

Priority 2

Minor roadways include main connecting roadways and roads through subdivisions. These streets will be plowed and salted once priority 1 roadways have received treatment.

  • Minor roadways include but not limited to the following: Lake Ave., Ludlow Rd., Madriver St., Detroit St., Allison Rd., & Columbus Ave.

Priority 3

Residential roadways are those that generally go through residential neighborhoods will be serviced once Priority 1 and Priority 2 streets are cleared. These are generally not included in salt routes.

  • Residential roadways include those that serve primarily residential areas.

Residents can assist the snow removal process in several ways:

  • Residents are asked to keep their sidewalks and driveway aprons free of snow and ice during winter weather.

  • Keep your distance when following snow plows.

  • Keep children away from snow plows.

  • Keep parked vehicles off of the street.

  • Do not shovel or plow snow into driveway aprons

  • Do not shovel or plow snow around fire hydrants or mailboxes

  • Do not attempt to pass a snow plow.

  • Do not shovel or plow snow into City streets.

Level 1 - Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Motorist are urged to drive very cautiously.

Level 2 - Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roads. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work. Motorist should use extreme caution.

Level 3 - All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

Snow Emergency - Pursuant to Ohio Revised Code sections 311.07 and 311.08, a County Sheriff may declare a snow emergency and temporarily close the state roads and municipal streets within his/her jurisdiction when such action is reasonably necessary for the prevention of public peace.
